So let’s get to talking about Theme Park design and this lovely gentleman that I joined on Periscope on Sunday. (If you missed Part one, you can find it HERE) Not only does he design theme park elements, he is an avid fan of them too! He has visited theme parks and rode coasters all over the world, from Canada to Holland! Someone asked him what his favorite design was ever (not his) and he answered Harry Potter and the Forbidden Adventure! For his favorite theme park? Phantasialand in Germany.
For Disney Theme parks (and resorts), he began first to work on the Lion King section of Art of Animation resort! He explained in detail how he designed everything in this section: the carpet, lamps, and so on! He also came back to help animate Captain Gantu in Stitch’s Great Escape! He is also the mastermind behind the Scarecrows that dot Main Street USA in Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party! These, he described weren’t designed to be scary, but instead meant to look like the good folks on Main Street USA had put them together to represent themselves! You have the marching band, the baker, and the mayor! I even found pictures of a confectionary lady! Great shots can be found here at: My Mobile Adventures!
It was special when he talked about attending a MNSSHP on his own and how he wasn't actually expecting anything special, but when the first Cast Member gave him his trick or treat bad and then filled it, he described it as "That feeling of the candy falling into the bag, I'm five years old." I love that feeling like you can be a kid again at Disney Parks and there's no more worries in the world while you're there! I think he gets that! ;)
Aside from that, when Star Wars was first brought up, he said he wasn’t allowed to talk about Star Wars, but at a later part in the broadcast, he brought up Star Wars himself. So perhaps he is working on something specific and found a way around it, but I wasn’t quick enough to catch any clues, if there were any! He was able to discuss Avatarland as he is not apart of that he said, but wouldn’t discuss anything else Animal Kingdom, hmm… He did divulge that he has worked on parade floats for a Disney’s California Adventure parade, but couldn’t give any specifics on it.

This is the only “proof” I have of the broadcast. This is a screenshot of a picture he had that he showed to us. For the sake of privacy (and for the sake of periscope) I didn’t capture anything else with “specifics”. He talked about being a concept artist for Theme Park Design and how it is their jobs as artists to try to break down everything in concept, to try to find out what will work or won’t work for a project before it is even presented to the next level. He said a lot of projects don’t even make it. Even still, he said he’s been told projects weren’t going to work out but then would see them years later being used anyway. He explained how it’s frustrating to not be able to answer his nieces and nephews when they ask him what he’s working on now! Because the mouse is always watching! Just like Roz from Monsters, inc. “I’m always watching you, Wazowski, always watching, always…”
